NQCG is developing and implementing, and will be operating, a global e-infrastructure system and collaborative environment for research, standardisation and innovation in future and emerging convergent technologies and the integration of state-of-the-art techniques of ontology design.

The phrase “convergent technologies” refers to the synergistic combination of four major “NBIC” (Nano-Bio-Info-Cogno) provinces of science and technology, each of which is currently progressing at a rapid rate:

  • nanoscience and nanotechnology;
  • biotechnology and biomedicine, including genetic engineering;
  • information technology, including advanced computing and communications;
  • cognitive science, including cognitive neuroscience.
